Character
Name: Vax'ildan
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Canon: Critical Role
Canon Point: Shortly before Vox Machina and the Herd of Storms faced down Umbrasyl.

History: There is a wiki here. It has a lot of information.

Personality: Vax'ildan is extremely concerned about knowing and understanding his purpose in life. This had its origins in his illegitimate, half-elven origins. He grew up neither human nor elf, and being taken from his human mother to live with the elves of Syngorn reinforced both his feeling of being an outsider and not knowing his place in the world. Vax'ildan is a person who wants to find meaning and importance in his life, and to feel like his actions have purpose.

He wants to make the world a better place, but Vax doesn't know how to do that -- or what his purpose in life is, to make the world better. In the show, we see this with his conflicts regarding what Vox Machina is -- specifically, he chafes at Vox Machina seeking wealth, fame, or vengeance against enemies without an eye to improve the world, especially before the journey to Whitestone. He is a very moral person, as well, which is also seen in those conflicts with the rest of his party.

Vax, in a sense, wants to show that he is worth something, proclaim his place in the world, and that he can make things better because his father -- ashamed of his half-elven children -- had bet against he and his sister amounting to anything or succeeding. This rebellion is also part of Vax's character; it extends past his father, and against many sources of authority. This sense of rebelliousness has gotten him into trouble, and led Vax to making mistakes. He fell in with a criminal element, the Clasp, in part because he is desperate to prove what he isn't (useless) and rebel against authority. He can get himself in trouble.

Another negative trait from this is Vax's impulsiveness. Vax'ildan is infamous for rushing into things -- both in the grand sense, such as joining the Clasp or declaring his love for Keyleth while critically wounded in an enemy's fortress, and in the smaller sense, such as sneaking off without the rest of his allies and into a vampire's bedroom. This has gotten him hurt and nearly killed before.

Vax also tends to be a loner, especially with people that he doesn't know. His experience in Syngorn and with the Clasp made him not trust people -- aside from his sister, Vex'ahlia. Vex experienced the same difficult things he did, and that made him grow especially close to her. This has led Vax to view the world as a them-against-the-world thing. Vex can be more social than him, and Vax -- being introspective, concerned about his place in the world, and impulsive -- has a way of keeping to himself, especially with those he doesn't trust. His experiences with Vox Machina have softened this, but not entirely.

They have taught him to value and love others, and understand that family can be found -- and that makes him very loyal to those who become his friends, his family, or more. Vax will kill and be killed to protect his friends. He will look after them, trying to get to know them, and protect them and their feelings as best he can.

However, he doesn't know how to handle conflict with those he cares about. When angry with or saddened by people he cares for, Vax tends to walk away and avoid conflict rather than deal with the situation. Suffice to say, this avoidant behavior sometimes hurts as much as anything else. We see this throughout Critical Role, though a standout moment of Vax walking away was when he stepped away from Keyleth when she was upset about the uncertainty in their relationship.

Despite Vax's relative serious nature, he has a mischievous side. He can be a prankster with the best of them -- at one point, he buttered his sister's sheets. He tends to play pranks on those he feels most comfortable with (and saves the worst for those he is close to).
